How does one lead a rational life in an irrational society?

My question will begin from the basic quest to find out who are we as individuals, what forms a society and how do we decide what is rational or irrational. Once we do know that its irrational, do we make noise or shrug and walk away. To me individual is an ever evolving phenomenon of discerning, making choices, actions and results. Then comes analysis, learning and synthesizing in your future life. But one question that has always bothered me is are we always trying to adapt/evolve ourselves to best possible ways in reaction to existing/dynamic surroundings. If we are, then are we just reacting to what is existing and not to the best, pure and sublime world which we all think, the way it should be.

So if we are always adjusting to something adulterated and debased and making just the best of the situation, then, we as responsible souls are allowing these things to exist in the society? And tomorrow when the future questions back how do we urge to handle it? Adjust and adapt or revolt and eradicate?

It is the fear of this responsibility that prompts most people to adopt an attitude of indiscriminate moral neutrality. If one found it difficult to maintain loyalty to ones' own conviction at the start, a succession of betrayals will only multiply the evil and courage to fight will diminish and will make it virtually impossible.

On a lighter note: song on my my mind, when you say nothin at all-by Ronan Keating from the movie Notting Hill.

There is nothing rational or irrational. I think everything is grey and to each his own. Our perception of these ideoligies merely reflect what the majority of people in a given society think.

Once in a while you have revolutionaries who break free from such mundane ideas and enlighten others. Alas, a common man's imagination is only limited to things around him and not to "pure and sublime world". Its always a few great men/women who change the thinking of the majority !

@Point 5- I appreciate ur comment. Here is my opinion. Revolutionaries or great thinkers were all human beings. They set themselves apart coz they chose to think. This resistance to think and rationalize has kept people in a big pool of commonality.
